Men's Group Saturday July 30th

Men of St. Michael's it's that time again to come together and sharpen our swords and prepare for battle in front of us. Come join the growing group of men that are getting strengthened by banding together and learning how to use the weapons we are entrusted with by God Almighty.

Remember, Men of St. Michael's, "We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." Ephesians 5:16

Filipino Fiesta August 27, 2011

Today I want to share with you a story. A story about a man and a vision. In 2002 a year after Monsignor Dolan arrived at St. Michael's Church, a vision was birthed in his heart. A vision to build a Holy Family Center that would bring the community together to celebrate.

A center to celebrate friendships, a center to celebrate love and a center to celebrate the bond that we all share, our belief in the risen Lord Jesus Christ.

Just like many visionaries of the past his vision was met with some reservations. But through constant prayer and guidance of the Holy Spirit that vision was realized this year.

On August 27, 2011 the community of St. Michael's will be able to enjoy the fruits of the hard work paved by Monsignor Dolan and all the parishoners who believed in his dream.

On August 27, 2011 we will celebrate by throwing a Filipino Party, a fiesta. For all those who have attended Filipino Parties in the past you know that Filipinos don't pull any punches when it comes to food.

The menu will include Lechon, which is a suckling pig that is roasted; Pancit which is noodles with vegetables; Lumpia which is a fried spring roll; and many more Filipino delicacies. And just like in the Gospel of John 6:5-15 where Jesus feed over 5,000 people, I'm sure there will be leftovers.

Tickets will be available after all masses up to the date of the event. I hope to see you there.

DANGER!

The other day I found my daughter, Jennilyn, sitting on the 2nd floor window sill. I immediately demanded her down and showed her how dangerous her actions were. I asked her what would happen if she fell. She replied in a tearful voice, “I would go to heaven.” I concurred and told her that her death would be my hell. I told her that I wasn’t ready to lose my little girl.

My son, Junior, then interjected, “I told her to get down.” I sternly responded, “If you know your sister is in grave danger you better not just tell her to stop but you better demand it!” I know if I were to see a child walking on a busy street I wouldn’t whisper, I would scream.

This event made me question myself. Am I doing enough to demand those around me to turn from their wayward lifestyles? Should I now put on a sandwich board proclaiming their expected doom without a relationship with Christ?

I believe the answer is no, because God doesn’t demand a relationship with Him. He has given us free will to choose Him. Although eternal hell is worse than death, proclaiming eternal damnation is no way to win souls for Christ.

The best way to win others to God is through a powerful witness of the life given to one who chooses Him. The best way for me to demand one to come to Christ is to live a life that others would desire. I pray that my life is an example for you to turn to Christ.

What Are You Worth?

Believe it or not in high school I was one of the last kids to be picked on a team. It wasn’t always this way as I actually looked somewhat athletic. After others saw how uncoordinated I was they began to think twice before picking me.

The part of getting picked last that hurt the most was the feeling of unworthiness or lack of significance. It was heartbreaking watching the line diminish and seeing that your own friends avoided picking you. Who could blame them I did have two left feet and my hand and eye coordination was suspect.

This feeling of unworthiness was a major crutch in my life and I see the same look in many today. I believe there are many searching to be picked, searching for significance in this world. I see it on the faces of men awaiting the job offer, I see it in others awaiting a significant other, I see it others longing for a deep and intimate friendship.

This brings me to a beautiful story that reminds me of my worth in the eyes of the Almighty Father.

Priceless

A well-known priest had been invited to speak at a parish mission. The church was packed and all eyes were on him as he started his presentation. He looked around the congregation and took something out of his pocket. Everyone could see he was holding up a one hundred-dollar bill. He asked, “Who would like to have this hundred-dollar bill?” People looked at each other and wondered if this was some kind of trick, but hands started going up. He said, “Let me do this.” Holding both hands up high he crumpled the bill up into a small tight ball. He then asked, “Who still wants it?” More hands went up in the air. “Well,” he replied, “What if I do this?” And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe as hard as he could. When he picked it up, everyone could see the money was all crumpled and dirty. “Now who wants it?” Almost every hand was in the air. “My friends, today you have all learned a very valuable lesson because, in spite of what I did to it, this bill has not lost any of its value. It is still worth one hundred dollars. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We may think we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen in your life, you will never lose your value in God’s eyes. Whether you are dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to God.” (World Library Publications)

Cry For Help

Here is a short story from his book Rediscovering Catholisism.

"More than ever, non-Christians and non-practicing Christians are sending you, me, and all of Christianity a message. Though they are not aware of it, they are indirectly giving witness to the Gospel. For within the message, there is a profound challenge for you and me to embrace a life rooted more fully in the example and teachings of Jesus Christ. Their message is clear, unmistakable, and disarmingly simple. Our siblings, parents, and children are sending us this message, as are our friends, neighbors, and colleagues. They are saying, whispering, crying out, “Don’t tell me, show me!”

Their plea comes from a longing deep within them and represents their great hunger. They don’t want to see another television evangelist, they don’t want to read another book or hear another tape about Christianity, and they don’t want to hear your amazing story of conversion. They want the real thing. They want to witness someone, anyone – just one will do – living an authentic life. Someone whose words are spoken by the authority of his or her actions. Someone striving humbly but heroically to live by what is good, true, and noble in the midst of and in spite of this Modern climate.

They are not sending us this message merely to sound the childish cry of “hypocrite.” Rather, theirs is a natural cry – a cry for help. They are saying to us, “Don’t tell me, show me!” Because they are so hungry for a courageous example of the authentic life, a life lived to the fullest, in this day and age. Seeing the conflicts and contradictions of our lives, they cry “hypocrite” out of their hurt and anger, because the disappointment of discovering that we are not living the life we espouse robs them of their own hope to live an authentic life. They are calling out to us like sheep without a shepherd, wanting to be fed, wanting to be led to the pastures of kindness, compassion, generosity, forgiveness, acceptance, freedom, and love.

I have heard this cry a thousand times, but the words of one man echo in my mind like a bad dream that keeps returning to haunt a terrified child. They are the words of Mahatma Gandhi. He is a man for whom I have great admiration – a man whom I believe strove with all his might to live an authentic life. I have studied his life and writings extensively, but one passage stands out. It speaks to me with a clarity that pierces my heart.

In relation to the well known fact that Gandhi read from the New Testament everyday and often quoted the Christian Scriptures, a reporter once asked him why he had never become a Christian He answered, “If I had ever met one, I would have become one.” In his own way, Gandhi was saying, “Don’t tell me, show me!” and simultaneously revealing his yearning for an example of an authentic life.

With all this being said, I believe there is also a desire within each of us to live an authentic life. We desire not only to witness authentic lives, but also to live an authentic life ourselves. We genuinely want to be true to ourselves and true to God. At times, we have perhaps resolved to live such a life with all the fervor we could muster. But, distracted by the sweet seduction of pleasure, possessions, or power, we have wandered from the narrow path. We know the truth, but we lack the discipline and strength of character to align the actions of our lives with the truth (Matthew 26:41). We have given ourselves over to the thousand different whims, cravings, and fantasies. Our lives have become merely a distortion of the truth we know and profess. We know the human family’s need for kindness, compassion, generosity, forgiveness, acceptance, freedom, and love, but we have divided our hearts with a thousand contradictions and compromises.

At every moment, the entire modern world kneels before us, begging, pleading, beckoning, for some brave man or woman to come forward and lead them by example of an authentic life.

Amidst the abundance of this age, which at times may seem all-prevailing, there is a great hunger in the people of today. We have a universal hunger for the authentic."
